Charles A. (Chuck) Hastings grew up in Washington and Oregon. His Dad served in WWII as a Naval Aviator, and it is he who planted the idea to attend a military academy. Checking the pre-qualifications, West Point was the only one which offered a vision waiver, which got accepted.
His appointment to West Point has an interesting back story. He grew up in a community predominately of Scandinavian ancestry and it was a tradition to attend a public sauna (steam bath) every Saturday. Chuck attended with his father, and they were friends with a local attorney, who also frequented the sauna. This attorney later became US Congressman Wendell Wyatt, First Congressional District of Oregon, who appointed Chuck to West Point.
Chuck is a 1969 West Point graduate who served 25 years in active and reserve service in communications and strategic planning. Chuck retired in 2007 after working for three major corporations (The Trane Company, Square D/Schneider Electric and Eaton Corporation) on federal regulatory affairs, business development, sales, and marketing, with the last 10 years focusing specifically on government contracting. Chuck and his wife, Diana, moved to Broomfield, CO in February 2007 to spend time with their first grandchild. They have two sons, one living in Thornton, CO and the other in Niceville, FL. They have 5 grandchildren.
Chuck’s retirement has been a mixed bag of activities. He has been active in his HOA and was appointed as a City/County Planning Commissioner for 11 years. He is active in supporting the County political efforts. Chuck and Diana have been bitten by the cruising bug and have almost 400 days at sea. Chuck tries to maintain an active physical regime by doing some activity 6 days a week, even with the limitations of hip replacement and back fusion. Ancestry and genealogy research is a huge “spare” time sink for both Diana and Chuck, and yes, he has traced his ancestry back to 1066.
