Colonel (Dr.) Hugh Donohue spent 23 years on active duty before retiring in 1992. He was commissioned as an Armor officer upon graduation in 1969, and completed Basic Officer training, Airborne and Ranger Schools before his first assignment with the Second Cavalry Regiment patrolling the Iron Curtain in Germany. He served there as a platoon leader and then Regimental Plans Officer.
In 1971 he entered Duke University School of Medicine under the Surgeon General’s program to send active-duty officers to medical and dental schools. He completed medical school in late 1974 and entered medical specialty training, completing it in 1980 as a general surgeon. His assignments of increasing responsibility culminated with posting to then-Fort Bragg, first to Womack Army Hospital and later to XVIIIth Corps headquarters as his final assignments.
Upon retirement in 1992 he held a variety of positions in the civilian sector in academia, private practice and industry, finally retiring in 2022 from his Medical Director position at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina.
Hugh and his wife currently live in the Deep South close to their largest cohort of grandchildren, and centrally positioned to visit family around the country.
He spends his time writing, building out his woodworking shop and trying to maintain some small level of fitness to keep up with the grandchildren!
